"Everyday Struggle" with Joe Budden, DJ Akademiks and special guest Lil Yachty: Episode 114

We are going to be talking about the interaction between Lil Yachty and Joe Budden. DJ Akademiks is literally useless in this interviews and at the end almost bows down to Joe Budden. Here are my thoughts:
2:42 - Joe Budden starts off with an aggressive tone (which may be his personality) he says "You made that cover?"  as if to insinuate COME ON BRUH... we know this is the label making you put this album art on there.  Of which Yatchy responds that he made the cover and the message of the cover is to just believe in yourself, to love yourself. Also explains that the cover shows it's showing all signs of life and further explains that he is the outcast of the hip-hop game and the people that surround him on the cover are also outcasts..
  • I think this comes down to Joe Budden not realizing that nowadays to even get to the table you have to have a major social media following first, so when an artists goes to an XXL or a Complex it's usually off of their social media following. And in most cases the artists is actually being approached by the media outlets to do feature covers and Freshmen XXL covers as to boost the magazines sales and website hits unlike when he came up and it was the label pushing for media coverage and promotion from media outlets.

4:44 - Lil Yachty sips his first drink from a small mug (Watch the running count below)
  • 8:27 sips a drink
  • 9:57 sips drink
  • 15:37 sips drink
  • 18:14 sips drink
  • 24:33 sips drink
  • 27:08 sips drink
  • 28:19 sips drink
-------------- I'm tired of keeping track. Can't be that much damn drink in that small ass mug. --------------

5:37 - Joe Budden starts to go in by stating "Feelings are Fickle, meaning they come and they go." He then continues to make the point that a person in this industry cannot be happy 24/7 "THAT IS A LIE" Of which Yachty exlains that coming from where he is from to having what ever you could possible ever want, what is there to complain about?

7:08 - Lil Yachty says it sounds like Joe Budden is trying to backtrack on his previous point Which really sets him off in a back-and-forth exchange about labels major vs. minor. Joe Budden yells "FUCK CAPITOL".

9:29 - Yachty explains that he knows now that the Embryo interview was a mistake. Joe Budden actually seems as a mentor wanting to make sure Yachty knows that these interviews can follow you and your career forever. And the negative interviews are the ones that always will get the most publicity from which he had to learn from experience.

11:54 - Joe Budden wants to know who Yachty thinks is his top competition of which he is not satisfied with Yachty's answer and thinks he is tap dancing around the question. Yachty thinks he is not the 'beat rapper' but the best at doing 'business'.
  • I think competition has definetely changed from Joe Budden's era because the gate keepers are gone. You really don't have to be with a major label to "BE ON". There are plenty of independent artists who are making the say if not better margins than their peers that are signed to a label. Ask Tech-N9ne. This causes a dissution in competition. Like in NBA, if average bench players are making as much as their teams superstar then the competition of basketball will naturally take a hit. Same can be said for rap. Everybody is making over a million and realizing that working together will help you make even more, then of course competition will take a hit. Unlike Buddens era where they had to be on a label to get any kind of real money and promotion.

13:30 - Joe Budden is dissatisfied that Yachty won't basically shoutout that he is better than all of his peers.

14:15 - Yatchy explains his business with major brands Sprite, Target, and being a creative designer at Nautica. He goes onto explain that they don't let people with his skin color in. "19 with red hair and diamond teeth, they don't even let people like us in." Joe agrees.

15:07 - Joe asks Yachty if he's in a 360 deal? Yachty replies I DON'T KNOW. How can you be a good businessman and not know the deal you signed? I liked the way Joe Budden seemed empathetic and wanting to know if Yachty understood what a 360 deal was, and further went onto educating him about what a 360 deal is, instead of just going in on him about not knowing.

- Update Lil Yachty is not in a 360 deal and owns his publishing. WHEW!!

17:54 - Joe Budden says fuck capital again. But he is all for the labels that bring the talent to the major labels like Shady, TDE, and QC

18:38 - You can tell that Joe Budden's tone kind of rubs Lil Yachty the wrong way. He should've realized this and adapted his tone which might have made Yachty more comfortable and open with answering questions.

19:20 - Joe Budden wants to know if Yachty is thinking long-term career past 19. What he do at 25, 26, 27, 28. Yachty responds he is putting his eggs in a basket and wants to do other things than music to ensure his future.

21:32 - Joe yells "SO YOUR NOT ALWAYS HAPPY?" To go back to a point he made earlier (5:37)

22:42 - Joe Budden goes to explain that he and the old heads like the new music. "I DON'T WANNA HEAR ME IN THE FUCKING CLUB". I liked the honesty.

23:15 - Good point that since Yachty responds to the negative comments that it is the reason why he gets so much more than others and is now the poster boy for the negative comments.

24:00 Good advice by Joe Budden about wanting him to be aware of everything in his career.

25:05 - Joe Budden explains that shit is different because his generation made it different. And wanted to talk to Yatchy to start a dialogue between the old heads and the new wave. And hip-hop can't continue with this disconnect. I agree with Joe on this statement.

27:27 - Lil Yachty likes to listen to: Drake, Kanye, Kid Cudi, & Lil B which is his favorite rapper.

-------- They start talking about Wale's new album SHINE and whether it was a flop or not -------------

Let us know what you think of the interview...
